Palliative Care & Neurological Conditions:Defining the Way Ahead15th September 2006 and 9th February 2007, LondonFollowing the highly successful first neurological event 'Palliative Care and Neurological Conditions: Defining the Way Ahead' on 15th September, the event was re run on 9th February. This was again highly successful with the title changed to 'Palliative Care and Neurological Condition: Neuro-Palliative-Rehabilitation The Way Ahead?' to reflect feedback from the first, to incorporate the term Neuro-Palliative-Rehabilitation coined following the survey analysis and to attract a mixed audience from neurology, rehabilitation and palliative care.
The aim was successful with wide ranging delegates from each specialty across all settings and sectors and from all areas of the UK. Please see all the presentations as these have all changed but of particular note are the new additions: Peter Brex is a Consultant Neurologist at Kings College Hospital London. Peter covered the importance of palliative care for neurological patients. He described how there were relatively few neurologists in the UK (approximately 1 per 170,000) and how there was a great geographic variation in access to neurological services but that what was important was to know who your local neurologist/palliative care person was, introduce yourself and know how to access support and advice so that learning can be shared. He concluded that a small, but significant, proportion of people with neurological conditions would benefit from palliative care. Dr Keith Andrews is a Professor and Director of the Institute of Neuropalliative Rehabilitation at Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability Putney and he covered what he felt were the important aspects of rehabilitation within neuro-palliative-rehabilitation and how services could benefit each other. Again, he explained the importance of formalising links between services. To read about the other speakers, please click here. To download the presentations, please click on the links below.
