End of Life Care e-learning programme

I am currently working on the End of Life Care Education & Training Project within the South West of England.

One of the work streams under this project is the End of Life Care e-learning programme. Our remit is to support Primary, Secondary and Social Care organisations within the South West in accessing the information, as well as working with the internal training leads to develop specific abbreviated learning pathways that would meet staffs’ learning requirements from the 156 available sessions.

The list of sessions, (which you can find under the resources tab on this page - ELCA), were developed from the National End of Life Strategy and were developed to give both organisations and staff the opportunity to have free access to an End of Life Care e-Learning Resource. This then can be incorporated into training plans, whether through blended learning or working through sessions on an individual basis.

Any organisation can contact me to find out more – my details are:

Updates from Dorothy House Hospice

Secondment

From January this year Dorothy House has seconded one of our community nurse specialists to join the palliative care team at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.

This is to free up one of the current members of the team to focus on general palliative care patients in the hospital and work along side ward staff in order to improve advance care planning with patients including their preferred place of care, offer more education to a range of staff about palliative care, advise on symptom management for end of life patients and facilitate timely discharge for those patients who wish to die at home.

The hospice has funded this initiative as part of our current five year strategy to ‘offer more to more people’ who are in the last phase of their lives.

Psychological Support Service

Dorothy House is now providing a discrete psychological support service, based on the NICE guidance for levels of psychological care.  The Family Support Team leads on this new service by providing consultative support to staff, clinical work and also training, through the Education Department.

All patients and families are entitled to support by the service which complements internal and external existing psychological care provision.
