Neurological Conditions Policy Group

This policy group was established in March 2005 and is chaired by Vicki Morrey, NCPC Trustee and Chief Executive of Prospect Hospice. The lead policy unit input is provided by Emily Sam, supported by Alice Fuller.

This is a wide ranging clinical area in which needs vary considerably and again there will be a staged approach to the work. This will address a small number of selected conditions initially, with a view to defining a single palliative care pathway for neurological conditions, with different entry points according to the needs that arise associated with each particular condition. The National Service Framework for Long Term Conditions, published in March 2005 and currently undergoing a mid-point review, is significant to the work of this group.

A pathway for supporting people to live with a neurological condition

The aims of this pathway are:

• as a template for ideal care - promoting the key worker concept,
• for use by professionals,
• keeping the patient/family at the centre of care decisions
• recognising the need for local variation
• supporting the proactive interface between pivotal services eg neurology, palliative care, geriatric care, rehabilitation, voluntary agencies, social care

This publication by the Neurological Conditions Policy Group presents the methods and conclusions of the first ever national survey of palliative care, neurology and rehabilitation services. It relates the journey from developing a pathway for meeting the palliative care needs of people with neurological conditions, to designing the final pathway, which is explained in detail. The document also contains illustrative case studies and best practice examples.
