Dying Differently:
The Ethical Dimensions of How and Where We Die

4th March 2009
Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital,
London

Dying Differently

Identifying and meeting people’s choices and preferences about their end of life care and place of death is central to the Government’s End of Life Care Strategy. This multi-disciplinary and multi-settings conference explored in some depth the issues How and Where people die. It considered the ethical challenges that arise, which too often are left unaddressed.

This conference

  • Highlighted and explored the ethical issues arising in relation to end of life care and place of death
  • Identified the differing and the shared perspectives between professionals, service providers, patients and carers
  • Captured the living experience of carers when the patient is dying
  • Enabled delegates to understand more of the ethical dimensions of choices in advance care planning, including an exploration of the contingent and evolving nature of choice.
  • Developed an improved understanding of the different roles of others involved
  • Explored some of the ethical implications of the End of Life Care Strategy
